Scotia is a village located in Schenectady County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 7,957. The name was provided by early land owner Alexander Lindsey, a native of Scotland.

The Village of Scotia is in south part of the Town of Glenville.

History

The land was purchased by Alexander Lindsey from the Iroquois in the 17th Century. In the 19th Century the village was the center of broom manufacture. The village was incorporated in 1904.

Geography

Scotia is on the north bank of the Mohawk River.

Scotia is located at 42°49'53" North, 73°57'55" West (42.831326, -73.965409)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.6 km² (1.8 mi²). 4.4 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.49% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 7,957 people, 3,233 households, and 2,014 families residing in the village. The population density is 1,796.6/km² (4,661.6/mi²). There are 3,410 housing units at an average density of 769.9/km² (1,997.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 96.75% White, 0.82% African American, 0.15% Native American, 1.09% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. 1.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,233 households out of which 34.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.8% are married couples living together, 12.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% are non-families. 32.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the village the population is spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 85.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.6 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $42,028, and the median income for a family is $51,449. Males have a median income of $38,074 versus $27,946 for females. The per capita income for the village is $20,386. 6.6% of the population and 5.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.7% of those under the age of 18 and 6.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
